Birth name: Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore (OP8) (Name meanings). Other names: Voldemort refers to him as "that champion of commoners, of Mudbloods and Muggles" (GF33). Birthdate: c.1840. Deathdate: June 1997 [Y17].
FAMILY Ancestry: Unknown. JK says this "would be a profitable line of inquiry." (TLC). Mother: ? Father: ? Grandparents: ? Cousins: ? Siblings: Brother Aberforth, who was once prosecuted for practicing "inappropriate charms on a goat" (GF24). Aberforth also appears in the photo of the original Order of the Phoenix (OP9). He is the bartender at the Hog's Head in Hogsmeade (EBF 2004). Location of childhood home: ? Spouse: ? Children: ? Pet: Fawkes, a phoenix.
APPEARANCE Eye color: blue. Hair color: white (originally auburn). Other characteristics: Scar in the shape of the London Underground above his knee (PS1). After summer of 1996, withered, blackened right (wand) hand (HBP3). The ring: "It was large, rather clumsily made of what looked like gold, and was set with a heavy black stone that had cracked down the middle." Worn on Dumbledore's left hand beginning at about the same time he injured his right hand (HBP4). After the potion: His face is damp and as pale as an Inferi. The corners of his mouth twitch.
Descriptions from the books: "He was tall, thin, and very old, judging by the silver of his hair and beard, which were both long enough to tuck into his belt. He was wearing long robes, a purple cloak that swept the ground, and high-heeled, buckled boots. His blue eyes were light, bright, and sparkling behind half-moon spectacles and his nose was very long and crooked, as though it had been broken at least twice."(PS1)
"He wore half-moon glasses, had along, crooked nose, and flowing silver hair, beard, and mustache."(PS6)
"Professor Dumbledore, though very old, always gave an impression of great energy. He had several feet of long silver hair and beard, half-moon spectacles, and an extremely crooked nose. He was often described as the greatest wizard of the age, but that wasn't why Harry respected him. You couldn't help trusting Albus Dumbledore..." (PA5)
The silvery light from the Pensieve illuminated Dumbledore's face, and it struck Harry suddenly how very old he was looking. He knew, of course, that Dumbledore was getting on in years, but somehow he never really thought of Dumbledore as an old man (GF30).
After the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, something injures Dumbledore's right (wand) hand. It was "blackened and shriveled; it looked as though his flesh had been burned away." (HBP3)
DUMBLEDORE at HOGWARTS First year: c.1851. House: Gryffindor. School awards, etc.: "Examined him personally in Transfiguration and Charms when he did N.E.W.T.s ... Did things with a wand I'd never seen before ..." –Griselda Marchbanks (OP31). Career: By 1938 he was Hogwarts Transfiguration professor (CS17) and head of Gryffindor House; Hogwarts School Headmaster c.1955 until his death.
The Headmaster's Office:
Location: There is contradictory evidence for the location of Dumbledore's office. In GF28, the entrance is on the second floor, but in HBP, it is on the 7th floor in one of the towers. From the books: "It was a large and beautiful circular room, full of funny little noises. A number of curious silver instruments stood on spindle-legged tables, whirring and emitting little puffs of smoke. The walls were covered with portraits of old headmasters and headmistresses, all of whom were snoozing gently in their frames. There was also an enormous, claw-footed desk, and, sitting on a shelf behind it, a shabby, tattered wizard's hat -- the Sorting Hat." (CS12) Entrance on 2nd floor through a secret door behind a statue of a gargoyle (GF28), the password is usually names of some kind of sweet (CS11, CS12; GF28). Once in the door, you ride on spiral wooden stairs that move slowly upward. Layout: "a large and beautiful circular room" (The Headmaster's office is in one of the towers) with windows. Decor: Fawkes the phoenix on his golden perch the Sorting Hat Gryffindor's sword cupboard with Pensieve in it portraits of previous Headmasters and Headmistresses: Fortescue (OP23), Phineas Nigellus, Armando Dippet, Dilys Derwent, Everard. claw footed desk and chairs "curious silver instruments stood on spindle legged tables, whirring and emitting little puffs of smoke" (CS12) Name Meanings Albus comes from the Latin word for white, as well as suggesting Albion, an ancient, Arthurian name for Britain.
Percival: Percival was one of the King Arthur's knights who attained the Holy Grail. He shares this name with Percy Weasley.
Dumbledore is an old English word for bumblebee, according to JKR, who says that she imagines him wandering around the castle humming to himself. Interestingly, the word "dumbledore" has another possibly important meaning. In an e-mail, Christopher Woosley writes:
"Although not widely known, an alternate meaning for the word Dumbledore is a style of hat the was made semi-popular in London in the 1880s-1890s. Taking this meaning into account, Albus Dumbledore's name would have the meaning "White Hat." As I'm sure you know that is a term for the hero or protagonist of a story. Mrs. Rowling named her great champion of good "White Hat"...I ran across this alternate meaning while researching a paper on British literature of the 19th century." Wulfric has a most interesting possible source. I received this in an email from a member of the Lexicon Forum: Grindelwald struck me because it looked so much like the monster Grendel in the 8th-century Norse epic Beowulf and Grendel. Maybe someone has already mentioned this to you and maybe not, but I made another connection reading under Dumbledore's profile. His second middle name is Wulfric. If you break down the names, Beowulf breaks down to BEO = 'powerful bear' and WULF = 'wolf.' Dumbledore's second middle name breaks down to WULF = 'wolf' and RIC = 'power, rule.' Considering Dumbledore conquers over Grindelwald in 1945, I would say there is a high probability Dumbledore's second middle name is an allusion to THE Beowulf and Grindelwald's name is an allusion to THE Grendel. Of course this is speculation, but considering the fact that Rowling studied Classics at the University of Exeter, it is almost certain that she is familiar with the Beowulf epic. SKILLS, ETC. Wand: ? Other devices: Pensieve (GF), Mirror of Erised (PS), Put-Outer(PS1), Time-Turner (PA), unnamed delicate silver instruments (OP), gold ring set with a heavy black stone cracked down the middle (HBP4). Languages: Spoke Mermish (GF) and recognized Parseltongue (HBP) as well as speaking a language that Harry did not understand (HBP26). Socks: Likes a pair of warm socks. [Essay: Thoughts on Socks] Favorite foods: Sherbet lemon drops, thingyroach clusters, hot cocoa, raspberry jam, acid pops. Organizations & affiliations: Order of Merlin, First Class, and Grand Sorcerer; Founder and Secretkeeper, Order of the Phoenix (OP6); Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards (temporarily "voted out" OP5); Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot (temporarily demoted OP5). Also famous for: Defeating the dark wizard Grindelwald in 1945; discovering the 12 uses of dragon blood. Skills: Alchemy; Transfiguration; some Legilimency (OP38); can cast spells without a wand; can become invisible without a cloak (PS12); may be able to see through cloaks of invisibility (PS12, CS14); can send messages with his Patronus (GF28). How did he learn it all? JK says he had good teachers at Hogwarts, but that Dumbledore is mostly self-taught (TLC). Patronus: Performed during Quidditch match in 1993 [Y13], but shape was indistinct (PA9). Performed again in 1995 [Y15], when it was described as a "ghostly bird" (GF28). JKR confirmed that Dumbledore's Patronus is a phoenix (EBF 2004). Worst fear/memory: ? Boggart: ? Prophecies: According to Minerva McGonagall, Dumbledore has predicted the end of Hogwarts (CS16). Incarceration: Dolores Umbridge attempts to arrest him for illegally forming an army, but is unsuccessful (OP27). Enjoys: Knitting patterns (HBP), chamber music and tenpin bowling(PS). Not: Dumbledore is not "Ron or Harry 'from the future.'" (JKR)
Chocolate Frog Card
ALBUS DUMBLEDORE Currently Head master of Hogwarts.
Considered by many the greatest wizard of modern times, Dumbledore is particularly famous for his defeat of the dark wizard Grindelwald in 1945, for the discovery of the twelve uses of dragon's blood, and his work on alchemy with his partner, Nicolas Flamel.
Professor Dumbledore enjoys chamber music and tenpin bowling.
MYSTERIES & MISCONCEPTIONS
Where did he go after being removed from his post as headmaster of Hogwarts in 1993 [Y13] and again in 1996 [Y16]? How did he know James & Lily had been killed so quickly after it happened? How did he know Lily had invoked "ancient magic" with her sacrifice? (He must have known because he instructed Hagrid to bring Harry to Privet Drive). What do the entwined snakes which come out of that little silver pot in his office mean? Dumbledore did not work on the Philosopher's Stone with Flamel, or more precisely, he didn't work on the Stone which has kept Flamel alive for six hundred years (since Dumbledore wasn't born yet when that Stone would have had to have been created). The card simply says that he was Flamel's partner in alchemy, not that Dumbledore had anything to do with that Stone. QUESTIONS What does Dumbledore think is worse than death? What was in Dumbledore's letter to Petunia Dursley?
DUMBLEDORE on FILM Dumbledore was played by Richard Harris in the first two films. Harris died some time after the second film and the part was played in the third film by Michael Gambon.
