PROFILE Lily Potter was born Lily Evans c.1960 (name: Sch2, OP28; date: CR). Her parents were Muggles but they were delighted that their daughter was a witch and they supported her going to Hogwarts. Lily's sister, Petunia, was disgusted by all the attention given to Lily. This animosity persisted for many years, even after Lily's death, when Petunia largely transferred her resentments to Lily's only child, Harry.
An excellent student Lily was a very talented student at Hogwarts (c. 1971 - 1978 [Y-9 - Y-2]), eventually becoming Head Girl in her last year. She was in Gryffindor House (Sch2). Her former Potions professor Horace Slughorn has fond memories of her: "Lily Evans. One of the brightest I ever taught. Vivacious, you know. Charming girl. I used to tell her she ought to have been in my House. Very cheeky answers I used to get back too." (HBP4) Slughorn says she was very good at Potions; her wand would also seem to indicate that she would be strong with charms.
Lily and James At Hogwarts, she met James Potter, a very popular and talented student who was thought to be "the height of cool" -- except by Lily, who considered him to be conceited and was disgusted by his rather trigger-happy attitude toward jinxing people. For his part, by the end of their fifth year James was very taken with Lily, although he only convinced her he'd gotten his act together by their seventh year, when they were Head Boy and Head Girl (OP29, PS4). She began going out with him that year.
Was "that awful boy" (Petunia, OP2) James? If so, at some point during their courtship, James may have visited the Evans household and met Petunia.
Lily and James were married straight out of Hogwarts (c. 1979 [Y-1]) and joined the Order of the Phoenix, together with James' three closest friends: Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew. Reckoned among the best of Dumbledore's loyal supporters in the first war against Voldemort, Lily and James were remarkable in that they confronted Voldemort personally on three occasions and escaped each time, though narrowly (OP37). At some point over the three years following their graduation from Hogwarts, both Lily's and James' parents died, and Lily did not see her sister Petunia for some years prior to her own death, although some minimal contact appears to have existed between the sisters (PS1).
Desperate times Despite the desperate risks they ran in the front lines of the war against Voldemort, Lily and James had a son, Harry, on July 31, 1980 [Y0]. It's noteworthy that despite the fact that Petunia was herself married and a mother by the time Harry was born, Lily knew her sister well enough that she and James arranged for James' friend Sirius to act as the baby's guardian in case anything befell them (PA20).
But fate intervened to place Lily and her family in the eye of the storm. In the year before Harry's birth, a prophecy had been made in the presence of Albus Dumbledore foretelling the birth of a boy "with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord" at the end of July -- and Harry was one of two wizard boys born that year who fit the criteria set down in the prophecy. By an ill chance, part of the prophecy was overheard by Severus Snape on the night it was made. Snape told Voldemort and Voldemort decided to eliminate the potential threat while the boy was still a baby -- not realizing that he would create the very menace he was seeking to destroy (OP37).
Dumbledore warned Lily and James that Voldemort was on their track, and they went into hiding in 1981 [Y1], living as Muggles in a place called Godric's Hollow. They used the Fidelius Charm to hide themselves, but the person they chose as Secret Keeper, Peter Pettigrew, was actually a spy for Voldemort who betrayed them. On October 31, 1981, Voldemort came to Godric's Hollow and killed James and Lily.
Lily's sacrifice Voldemort did not intend to kill Lily, even giving her a chance to get out of the way as he moved to attack Harry; she could have lived and yet she chose to protect her son.In doing so, she unknowingly gave Harry a level of protection Voldemort couldn't touch.
After the deaths of Lily and James, Dumbledore stepped in, setting aside the legal arrangements the Potters had made for Harry's care. (Since Sirius Black was almost immediately condemned to Azkaban without trial, however, changes would have been required in any case.) Dumbledore, feeling that Harry's physical safety from Voldemort overrode any other consideration, chose the course he considered right over what would have been easier for him to live with: arranging for the strongest possible magical protection over the child rather than a loving home for him. Dumbledore cast a charm to reinforce the protection Harry gained from the shedding of his mother's blood as long as Harry lived with someone of that blood. Ironically, this made the Dursleys -- otherwise unfit as guardians in any other sense for the child, in large part due to Petunia's bad relationship with Lily -- the only possible guardians to seal the charm and thus help keep the boy alive, through that very relationship (OP37).
